Lucas Sloot ('88) is a visual artist living and working in Arnhem (NL).
Lucas' works are often copied elements from everyday life. Beautiful constructions such as electricity pylons, streetlamps and spiral staircases, as well as natural elements such as branches, wood and entire landscapes. These can both form the inspiration and the final work. Sometimes these forms are modified or combined with other elements. In doing so highlighting parts that already exist in the original objects, with a focus on the important, small parts and processes. In this way, they tell us how to better understand the world.
In his art, Lucas often works with the relationships or roles people have in relation to their own environment. This can be physical, such as to nature, the urban landscape or other creatures. It can also be mental, such as the perception of oneself or another, or the effect a person can have on the environment. His works help humans and other creatures to make themselves more aware of their surroundings. Making the environment tangible and graspable, finding one's own position. How often are you overlooking something that’s just there? The works are a point of reference. A wake-up call to feel where you are. Look at all those varieties of trees with their fresh spring buds. Aren't they beautiful?
The awakened relationship between the one and the other, that is what makes us understand what is already there. Things you perceive need to be put into their own context. Simple questions can help, such as: What does it do? What is it made of? Does it make me happy? Or maybe sad? These questions help us understand how and why we value something.
Lucas's intention in making work is primarily to be aware of one's own position so that an intrinsic appreciation of one's surroundings can emerge. In many of the recent works, however, there is an activist undertone that could be picked up by the alert viewer. A message to people that they are taking the world in too selfishly.
Lucas feels most at home working with wood. It is a material he got to know by working with it a lot. He supplements this with reading about nature, trees and wood. A different kind of learning. Wood is a friendly material, in which you can always find its own will. Wood is alive. It shrinks, expands, discolours and cracks with time and use. The works range from smaller objects to huge constructions. Lucas also uses digital drawings, video and other materials when they suit better.
